Risk & Crisis Communications
Coursework and Instruction
4Comm was built to provide training and instruction in risk and crisis communication. The 4Comm team has spent years developing established curriculum in all aspects of emergency public information, including on-camera media interviews, social media monitoring and reporting, and Joint Information System/Center operations. The team has provided instruction for literally thousands of participants, including the U.S. Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Department of Army, Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in addition to dozens of states and scores of localities.
While 4Comm offers a variety of established instruction in modern risk and crisis communication concerns, the team also specializes in customized learning to ensure the presented content meets the size, scope, audience, budget and objectives of the training sponsor.

Available courses
Spokesperson Training for Leadership
For senior leadership, policymakers, government officials, and subject-matter experts who are likely to interact with the news media before, during or after an emergency event. (A similar course is also available for public affairs/public information officers.)
Participants engage in a variety of intense and fast-paced practice interviews, including one-on-one, on-camera and remote on-camera sessions. Message development, interview preparation, remote staging methodology and news conference stagecraft is emphasized and reinforced throughout this workshop.

Joint Information System/Center Methodologies
This workshop prepares participants to build relationships and work alongside internal and external partners with a common goal of communicating with one voice to multiple stakeholders.
Participants work in group sessions that facilitate planning, coordination, team building and implementation of Joint Information System and Joint Information Center (JIS/JIC) best practices. Participants have the opportunity to practice gathering, analyzing and verifying information; crafting and coordinating messaging; disseminating and monitoring information via multiple communication channels; and tracking and documenting incoming data.
A final JIC activation drill using a pre-developed scenario allows participants to “put it all together” with coaching and assessment support from instructors – all designed to help identify improvements, enhancements and strategies that will optimize JIS/JIC operations.
Social Media Monitoring and Reporting
Specifically designed for public information officers, public affairs officers, communication professionals, emergency managers and Joint Information System/Center staff.
Participants learn and discuss: (1) understanding the importance of media monitoring; (2) the role social media plays in emergency response; (3) using social media tools; (4) documenting concerns during the media monitoring process; and (5) employing a continuous strategy of vigilance and response.
This course is a compact but thorough examination of current social media practices and includes gaining an understanding of the significance of analytics in relation to reaching target audiences. Participants engage in several hands-on activities to gain practice in the practical application of social media strategies.
Identifying and Addressing Communication Complexities
This workshop is specifically designed for public information officers, public affairs officers, communication professionals, emergency managers and local, state or Federal government personnel who interact with external stakeholders.
Participants learn and apply focused methodologies and strategies for: (1) identifying and addressing various communication complexities; (2) crafting messages during high-stress events; (3) applying risk communication concepts to develop effective messages and outreach approaches; (4) using key risk communication methods to motivate action; (5) understanding the relationship between communications and community engagement; and (6) implementing outreach methods that promote equity and undermine apathy.
Participants engage in intensive, hands-on activities that give them firsthand knowledge and experience in the practical application of communication strategies.
